A Standardized Patient is a person who has been coached to represent the history, personality, physical findings, and emotional structure and response pattern of an actual patient accurately and consistently at a particular point in time. LUCOM employs Standardized Patients in the training and evaluation of health care professionals. Standardized Patients are interviewed and examined by male and female healthcare students. Patients will be audio and/or videotaped during simulation. With oversight and direction from the Assistant Director for Standardized Patients and the Assistant Director for Simulation, the Standardized Patient I assists with the implementation and delivery of simulation activities in the training of healthcare professionals. The basic function of an SP is to simulate medical scenarios or cases with learners in teaching and/or assessment activities. Standardized patients will be instructed and trained for a given case. During teaching or assessment activities, SPs should expect that the learner may interview, counsel and/or physically examine them.Essential Functions and Responsibilities1. Works in a professional manner when interacting with learners, faculty, staff, and peers.2. Simulates all aspects of the scenario, including history of current problem, affect/behavior, and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner.3. Accurately and consistently completes checklists.4. Accepts ongoing feedback from supervisor/trainer and incorporates into case simulation.5. Provides feedback to learners and colleagues in a constructive manner.6. Must have access to email communications and have basic computer skills.7. Other duties as requested and/or assigned.Qualifications, Credentials, and Competencies1. High school degree or GED required.2. Demonstrated ability and willingness to work cooperatively with learners, faculty, and staff.3. Demonstrated ability to be instructed to consistently simulate a case scenario in a standardized, accurate and reliable manner.4. Demonstrated flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments.5. Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.6. Ability to maintain confidentiality.7. Demonstrated time management skills and organizational skills.8. Ability to problem-solve.9. Reliability and punctuality.10. Commitment to the education of health professional.
